The Results of the Planning Board’s Decision on the Property Behind The Speckled Trout

Friends – The 12 unit townhouse development proposed by a Charlotte developer for the downtown .905 acre tract back of The Speckled Trout was defeated by the Town Planning Board after an excellent discussion of relevant issues. The meeting included presentations and comments from Town Planning Director Kevin Rothrock, the developer and his advisors, and the public. Major issues impacting the decision were: the requested substantially greater unit density than Town code permits, inadequate parking within the development, the proposed buildings’ height and scale, and the use of units for short term rentals. The Planning Board is an advisory group to the Town Council so this project will probably be presented to the council for a final decision at their Tuesday January 9th. meeting at 6:00 P.M.at Town Hall. Blowing Rock currently has two superb developments approved and in progress: the 23 unit Chestnut Hill luxury townhouses on the old Blowing Rock Hospital site and The Inn on Cornish 21 room hotel on property across Main Street from Chetola. With the greatly improved economy we anticipate more developments being proposed for Blowing Rock in the new year.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,
