Downtown Development Subcommittee

Just in from today’s meeting.   Our meeting discussion today included:  Parking, Transitional Zones, Expansion of Central Business District, East / West Main Street, Building Height, Primary Entrance, and Defining Primary Street.  The meeting was a good two-hour discussion and staff has been requested to gather specific data for the next meeting which will be May 29th at Town Hall starting at 1:00 PM.

SEEKS APPLICANTS FOR PUBLIC LAND APPEARANCE AND RECREATION BOARD
 
Are you interested in the future of your community and have extra time to volunteer?  Would you like to serve on The Blowing Rock Public Land, Appearance and Recreation Board?
  
The Blowing Rock Public Land, Appearance and Recreation Board (PLARB) – 1 Vacancy  
The Blowing Rock Public Land, Appearance and Recreation Board consists of seven (7) members, all of whom are citizens and residents of the Planning and Zoning jurisdiction of the Town (primary residence is Blowing Rock and you are a registered voter of live in the ETJ).  Members are appointed by the Town Council for a term of three (3) years.  It is desirable that at least one member be a member of the design profession. PLARB shall have all of the responsibilities and duties imposed by the enabling ordinance and shall promote and assist in the implementation of general community beautification in accordance with adopted Town plans/policies. This commission also studies the appearance characteristics of the Town and recommends standards and policies of design for the Town.  Also serves as the Town tree and public art board.  The Board meets at 9:00 a.m. the third Thursday of the month.  There is 1 vacancy.

If you have an interest in serving on this board, please complete a Board Appointment Application by Thursday, May 29, 2024.  The application is attached, but also is located on our website (www.townofblowingrock.com) or a copy can be picked up at Town Hall.  Once completed please submit to Hilari Hubner, Town Clerk, at Post Office Box 47, Blowing Rock, NC 28605 either by mail or email to clerk@townofblowingrocknc.gov.

PUBLIC NOTICE

The Town of Blowing Rock Town Council will hold a budget work session on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The meeting will take place at Town Hall located at 1036 Main Street, Blowing Rock N.C. The meeting is open to the public.

Shane Fox has confirmed that the Town plans to live stream the budget work session on Tuesday May 21. It will be on the Town’s YouTube Channel which is publicly available through the Town’s website.  I encourage anyone who has the time on May 21 (1 pm to 5 pm) to attend – either in person or as a follow up.  Live is preferable, because it lets the Town Council know in real time that BRCA is interested in the budget. 

Art in The Park Weekend

From Town Hall: The first Art in the Park event of 2024 is this Saturday! 80+ regional, juried artisans will present their work along Park Avenue. No parking is permitted on Park Avenue overnight Friday, as show set up begins early Saturday morning! Art in the Park

The Blowing Rock Civic Association is pleased to again participate in the sponsorship of this year’s Memorial Day Program.  The event is tentatively scheduled at Memorial Park Gazebo at 11:00 am on May 25th.  More event details forthcoming.  U.S. Navy Seal Stephen” Scuba” Brown, served over 25 years in United States Special Operation before retiring in May 2010 as a Special Operator Senior Chief.

He is from Cumberland Maryland. It was at a local YMCA that he began swimming competitively at the age of 5. He would get his civilian diving certification during 11 grade High School summer and it was the dive instructor that encouraged him to join the Navy Dive Program. Upon graduating high school he would attend bootcamp in Great Lakes, Il. However, after completing his diving physical fitness screening, he was asked to change to the Navy UDT/SEAL Program. He would attend Basic Electricity & Electronic and Torpedoman’s Mate Surface Operator A schools in Orlando Fl.  He reported to Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training (BUD/S) at Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado, California. He was in BUD/S Class 137. Where only 19 of the original 110 would graduate in May 1985.
His operational assignments include Seal Delivery Vehicle Team Two, Naval Special Warfare Development Group, and Naval Special Warfare Group Four. He was the Leading Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Special Operation program at RTC Great Lakes. He has completed 8 overseas deployments and 2 combat deployments in support of the Global War on Terrorism, including Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM.
He has various military qualifications including SDV Pilot and Navigator, Dive Supervisor for Special Operator dive rigs and SDV, Naval Special Warfare Scout Sniper, Military Static Line/Freefall Parachute Jump Master, and Master Training Specialist. He is a graduate of the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy.

After retiring he was a Field Service Representative for Blackbird Technology and for three years deploying to Afghanistan several times in support of USSOCOM. In 2014 he would start a new career working for Bank of America as an VP as an Info Security Threat Management Specialist. He is also an active member of the BofA’s Military Support and Assistance Group (MSAG) Charlotte Employee Network.
He has been married for 34 yrs. to his Navy Veteran wife. She served four years and deployed in support of Operation Desert Storm. They have two adult children.  Please join us for this special presentation.
