Blowing Rock Civic Association’s BRCA 28605
By Jean Kitchin, Chair: BRCA

If you have not discovered the weekly video message that is sent by BRCA 28605’s host Tom Barrett, you are missing a great source of local information.  As a virtual trainer in a portion of his career, Barrett had the equipment needed to record and post the weekly broadcasts in his home office.  The idea is one that was shared by a local resident who had seen weekly broadcasts in another town and suggested that it might be an additional way for Blowing Rock residents to keep up year-round with local news and events.

When Barrett was first asked to consider taking on the responsibility as “Mr. BRCA 28605,” it was thought that there might not be enough information to produce and record weekly; however, there is plenty going on in Blowing Rock so he has not missed a single week in over a year.  The audience has grown to over 870 email addresses, and the open rate is a high 73%.

Barrett normally keeps the broadcasts limited to several minutes and then posts the information for follow up.  He shares upcoming Town Council meetings, Planning Board meetings, and special events, such as Memorial Day, Fourth of July parades, Veterans Day, and the recent Town Council Candidate Forum.  The videos that he records at special meetings and events are posted on the website for future viewing, if people miss attending them or want to watch them again.

Everyone is welcome to sign up to receive the videos and information free.  To do so, go to
